Miles began her career on stage in the late ‘40s and on television in the ‘50s. She was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Cass in the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy, and again in the same category for her work as Mrs. Florian in 1975’s Farewell, My Lovely. Viewers might also remember her from playing Meryl Streep’s mother in the 1989 comedy, She-Devil. In her later years, Miles appeared in episodes of SEX AND THE CITY and LIFE ON MARS as well as the film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, where she reprised her role of Dolores from the original Wall Street.

Over the years, Miles became famous for attending numerous events and walking the red carpet in eye-catching clothes and hats. The phrase “she would attend the opening of an envelope” has been credited to comedian Wayland Flowers to describe her and Andy Warhol.

Our thoughts are with Miles’ friends and loved ones during this difficult time. For more on your favorite daytime stars — past and present — keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
