Soap operas have always been one of the best mediums in which to portray social issues due to their ability to tell the story over a longer period of time and in greater detail. And GENERAL HOSPITAL’s portrayal of Mike’s Alzheimer’s disease and the struggles of his family to care for him has struck a chord with many viewers. The powerful storyline has already won the Sentinel Award for the way it has tackled the topic. Now, GH is partnering with The SCAN Foundation and Next Avenue to offer resources and support for the millions of families trying to provide quality care to a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Stars Max Gail (Mike), Laura Wright (Carly), Maurice Benard (Sonny), and Chad Duell (Michael) appear in the PSA.
“Caregiving is emotionally and physically demanding,” Wright said. “Whether you’re caring for an older relative or friend with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or another challenge, resources are available.”You can visit the Next Avenue website for resources like an Alzheimer’s Guide for Families, 10 Things You Can Do Checklist: Aging With Dignity and Independence, 10 Things Millennial Caregivers Should Know About Caring for a Friend or Loved One, and more.
Keep watching to see how Mike’s storyline continues to unfold and his family faces the reality of caring for him during this difficult time. And for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
