Hayley Erin Hopes Her #MeToo GENERAL HOSPITAL Storyline Will Help People “Find Their Voice”
Soap operas have a long history of reflecting important real-life issues in their fictional storytelling, and GENERAL HOSPITAL is doing just that with its tale of sexual harassment in the workplace as Kiki exposed Dr. Bensch’s reprehensible behavior at the hospital. “I was excited to be entrusted with such an important message,” Hayley Erin admitted on Twitter of the soap’s leap into the #MeToo movement, “only nervous to see how it played out for the character. Poor Kiki can’t catch a break.”
These kinds of storylines often have real-world repercussions as people are inspired by them to change their own lives. “If we can help just one person find their voice,” the actress declared, “that’s enough for me.” And sure enough, her social media was flooded by grateful fans sharing their stories and thanking Erin and GH for telling this particular story. In fact, when one fan asked if Kiki may have overreacted to Dr. Bensch just a little bit, Erin quickly replied: “Not even a little bit.” and a flurry of fans backed her up vociferously.
The scene where Alexis invited Kim, Ava, and Olivia to share their own stories to inspire Kiki not to give up on her fight to bring Dr. Bensch to justice touched viewers across the country, and Erin herself counts herself lucky to be in such esteemed company. “It’s a pleasure working with such strong female actors,” she expressed. “I think they deserve every ounce of recognition they get and then a thousand times more.”
Erin also expressed her gratitude to the viewers of GH who keep the show going even after 55 years on the air. “Thank you for all being so dedicated,” she said. “We only get to do what we love because of you.”
