For years, GENERAL HOSPITAL viewers watched as Nikolas struggled with both the darker and lighter sides of his personality. Now that the Cassadine prince has risen from the dead, which disposition will reign? During his final days in Port Charles back in 2016, Nikolas had certainly embraced his darker Cassadine roots as he faked his death and tried to frame wife Hayden for his murder. But just a few weeks later, on that Greek island, Laura’s son proved that there was still good inside him when he signed over his inheritance to wicked Uncle Valentin in order to spare the lives of his loved ones.
“There’s such a Shakespearean feel to GH, which I love,” Nikolas’ new portrayer, Marcus Coloma, raved to Soaps In Depth. “Hamlet’s fatal flaw was he didn’t act, and I think Nikolas’ fatal flaw was similar. He struggled with his conscience, and as a result, here was this very evil, corrupt man [in Valentin] who was basically threatening his entire world.”
During the years that Nikolas has been gone, Coloma suggests, the character has had plenty of time to examine his past actions… and to figure out whom he can and can’t trust. “I’ve known people who come from very wealthy families or from the celebrity world,” explained the actor, “and it’s a very interesting thing to not know who actually cares about you and who is using you. Nikolas battled with that and died because of maybe being too trusting.”
That kind of betrayal can certainly affect a person’s demeanor. Not to mention the toll that lost time with son Spencer has taken on Nikolas. “It’s brutal to be away from your kid,” Coloma said. “I’ve had a taste of what it’s like to not see your kid for a second — let alone for the amount of time that Nikolas has been ‘dead’!” With all that Nikolas has been through, he’s just not the same guy he once was. “He’s really changed significantly,” Coloma confirmed.
But just how dark is the prince now? “That’s such a good question, and that will absolutely be revealed,” the actor teased. “I will tell you that Nikolas is definitely focused on payback… and as an actor, I’m looking for conflict!”
