Fans of Maurice Benard and Sonny Corinthos are not going to want to miss the Monday, Nov. 12 episode of GENERAL HOSPITAL. In fact, they might just want to make sure their DVR never deletes it so they can keep it for posterity! To commemorate Benard’s 25th anniversary with the soap, GH is airing a very special episode that asks the intriguing question: “What if Sonny never joined the mob?”
After his troubled childhood in Bensonhurst, Sonny was taken under the wing of local crime boss Joe Scully and began his career in organized crime. He’s had plenty of trouble over the years as rival crime bosses have attempted to horn in on his territory or just take him out of the picture entirely, but recently, his past has come back to haunt him. Port Charles’ new D.A., Margaux Dawson, is gunning for Sonny because he’s the one who killed her father under Scully’s orders years ago.
In this special “What if…?” episode, fans will be able to see how Sonny’s life would have unfolded if he hadn’t entered a life of crime. This is the special appearance that Dominic Zamprogna teased, as he returns as Sonny’s son, Dante Falconeri (who probably won’t get shot in the chest by his father in this alternate universe!). Benard’s real-life son, 13-year-old Joshua, will also be playing a young Sonny in the special hour of daytime television.
Benard joined the cast of GH back in August of 1993 following a successful run as Nico on ALL MY CHILDREN. In his 25 years with the soap, the talented actor has amassed six Daytime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor, taking home the gold in 2003.
