Get ready to travel back in time with Jacob Young (JR, ALL MY CHILDREN; ex-Rick, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL; ex-Lucky, GENERAL HOSPITAL)! This week, the Emmy winner began filming Prepare For Launch — a biopic set in 1968 and based on the life of astronaut John S. Bull!
“It’s truly an honor to be portraying Lt. John S. Bull,” Young shared on Instagram. “Pilot, NASA Apollo Astronaut, family man, and patriot.”
Bull was a United States Navy lieutenant and fighter pilot who served three tours on USS carriers. In 1966, he was selected as one of the 19 astronauts in NASA Group 5 to fly to the moon as part of Project Apollo. Unfortunately, Bull never made it to space. Learning that he suffered from pulmonary disease forced him to resign as an astronaut. But he went on to work at the NASA’s Ames Research Center in California for more than a decade.
Working on Prepare For Launch has also been a Pine Valley reunion of sorts for Young. His former AMC co-star, Amanda Baker — who played JR’s wife, Babe — has been cast as Bull’s wife, Nancy! “Great day of filming with my movie family,” Young wrote on Instagram, posting a pic of himself, Baker and their TV son, Ethan Pogue, standing in front of a vintage 1966 Chevy pickup.
In addition to several vintage cars being used in the movie, producers even built an Apollo Capsule for scenes involving Young and co-star McTyere Parker, who is playing fellow Group 5 astronaut James Irwin in the film. (Irwin later went on to walk on the moon in 1971 as the pilot for Apollo 15.)
Filming on Prepare For Launch is expected to continue through the month of December. The expected release date for the movie is March 2021, so be sure to check back with SoapsInDepth.com for further updates!
