Soap Actor Marcus Smythe Dead at 70

Actor Marcus Smythe died at the age of 70 on Aug. 20 at home with his family in La Crescenta, CA, following a three-year battle with brain cancer. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Goddard, his two sons, Harrison and Duncan, and his brother, Casey.

Smythe played numerous roles in different daytime dramas throughout the 80s, beginning with GUIDING LIGHT’s Gordon Middleton in 1979. From 1982-83, he played Dane Taylor on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, and from 1985-87, he was Peter Love on ANOTHER WORLD. In 1990, Smythe portrayed Martin Ross on GENERAL HOSPITAL, and in 2000 he could be seen as Dean Eldridge on PORT CHARLES. In addition, Smythe made numerous guest appearances on primetime television series like SEINFELD, MURPHY BROWN, BEVERLY HILLS, 90210, and MAD ABOUT YOU. He also performed in off-Broadway theatrical productions and national stage tours, receiving the Drama Logue and LA Weekly Drama Award during his career.
