Veteran Actress and Soap Alum Phyllis Somerville Dead at 76

Veteran actress of stage and screen, Phyllis Somerville, died of natural causes on July 16 at the age of 76. Soap fans might remember her from one of her appearances in daytime dramas in the ‘90s. She played Mrs. Swan on LOVING, Mrs. Beasley on GUIDING LIGHT, Charlotte Stonecliff on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and Annabelle Fettle and Alice on AS THE WORLD TURNS.

During her storied career, Somerville made numerous guest appearances on primetime series like SEX AND THE CITY, THE SOPRANOS, THIRD WATCH, HOUSE OF CARDS, and BLUE BLOODS. She played Marlene in the Showtime series THE BIG C, Lady Ray on OUTSIDERS, and was most recently portraying Betty Carroll on the in-production MARE OF EASTTOWN from HBO.

On the big screen, Somerville could be seen in films like Little Children, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Surviving Family. On stage, she appeared in productions of Over Here, The Spitfire Grill, and Happiness, with her most recent Broadway credit being Mrs. DuBose in the 2018 production of To Kill a Mockingbird from Aaron Sorkin.
