What Happened to Victor Cassadine on GENERAL HOSPITAL

Tags:

Victor Cassadine on GENERAL HOSPITAL was believed to be deceased, but as longtime viewers know, it’s hard to keep a Cassadine in the grave! But for newer fans who might not be familiar with Victor’s history, he’s one of the more dastardly members of the Cassadine family, who has threatened multiple lives — and even the entire city of Port Charles! The character of Victor Cassadine was introduced back in 1981 alongside brothers Mikkos and Tony. The part was played by Thaao Penghlis, who also reprised the role in 2014, but when the character was brought back to life in September 2021, Victor was recast with Charles Shaughnessy.

In one of GH‘s most infamous storylines, Mikkos, Tony, and Victor stole the Ice Princess diamond and planned to use it as a power source for a weather machine that would freeze the world! But he wasn’t without a heart, because Victor had a brief romance with B-movie actress Tiffany Hill. Luke Spencer, Laura Webber, and Robert Scorpio journeyed to Cassadine Island where they thwarted the evil plot and while Mikkos and Tony were both killed, Victor was arrested and was later believed to have been killed behind bars.

In 2014, Victor appeared at Robin Scorpio’s doorstep to reveal that he was the new director of the WSB and he wanted the doctor to bring Helena Cassadine and Stavros Cassadine back to life. When she refused, he informed her that her beloved Jason Morgan was still alive in cryogenic stasis, so she could help him as well. Reluctantly, Robin eventually agreed to his scheme.

It was also revealed that Victor had a past with Liesl Obrecht, and had also put Rafe up to running Patrick’s car off the road, resulting in the death of his and Sabrina’s son, Gabriel. At the Crichton-Clark Clinic, Robin had a breakthrough with her reanimating process and wanted to test it on Stavros and Helena, but Victor didn’t want to risk his own family and forced her to try it on Jason first. Once he was successfully brought back to life, Victor had no further use for Robin and had his goons take her away as he prepared to resurrect Helena and Stavros.

Victor was also working with Levi to steal the Aztec treasure, and when Nathan West came to Maxie’s rescue, Victor was stunned to learn he was Obrecht’s son and hesitated to shoot the cop, presumably fearing he could be Nathan’s father! After taking a blood sample from Nathan and locking him up with Maxie, Victor asked Liesl if he was Nathan’s father, but she denied it. However, later, Obrecht claimed that it was true, and she had only kept quiet to protect Victor from a jealous Cesar Faison.

Victor was furious to have had his child kept from him, and when Nathan burst into his office demanding he release Maxie, Victor warned the cop he couldn’t shoot his own father. Nathan was stunned when Obrecht confirmed the claim, but after he ran off to save Maxie, the DNA test results came back and Victor was confused to find he and Nathan were not related. When Anna Devane arrived to arrest Victor, Obrecht grabbed his gun and shot him. She insisted she had to do it to protect Nathan because nobody else could know Victor wasn’t really his father — the truth was much worse! (It was the evil Faison who was later revealed to be Nathan’s dad.)

Victor set off a self-destruct bomb that destroyed the clinic and presumably himself, but as soap fans know, characters come back to life all the time. And in 2021, the Cassadine turned out to be very much alive, to Obrecht’s shock! After passing out during a turbulent plane ride, Obrecht awoke to find herself being held prisoner by Victor, who admitted he didn’t approve of her new relationship with Scott Baldwin. Thankfully, he had his goons give Scott a parachute before tossing the guy out of the plane when he abducted Obrecht for himself! While she was angry to find out she’d been kidnapped by her ex, things got even worse when he revealed that he was working with Peter August!

Victor abducted Valentin Cassadine to ask for his help dealing with Peter and shocked him further by revealing that he was his father! After the WBS invaded the Cassadine compound, Victor was taken into custody, but eventually secured his release by giving up information on Peter in exchange for immunity. When Spencer Cassadine was arrested for stalking Ava Jerome, Victor interceded to arrange a plea deal for the teen. He also put two and two together and realized that Brook Lynn was raising Maxie and Peter’s daughter, and told his partner-in-crime the shocking truth. Realizing Valentin had figured it out as well, Victor had him kidnapped and stuffed in the trunk of a car to keep him quiet! Obrecht tried planting a listening device on the Cassadine but he soon discovered it.

Believing Drew Cain had valuable information hidden in his memories, Victor attempted to trigger his mind control but failed. As Anna and Felicia went to Austria to find proof that Victor was behind Luke’s death, Sam and Dante worked with Drew to trap the Cassadine. Unfortunately, Carly accidentally spoiled the setup and they only learned that Victor was after something called Project Demeter.

When Victor returned from a business trip, Laura tried to have him deported so he ordered Valentin to kill her, threatening to cut off any access to Charlotte if he didn’t. Unfortunately, Valentin refused to obey. Next, Victor helped Nikolas cover up Esme’s fall from the parapet by making it appear she was in the South of France. He also attempted to woo Lucy Coe, only to later suspect that she was spying on him. A bug planted in a necklace he gifted her proved him correct, so Victor framed Anna for Lucy’s murder. When Holly Sutton returned to Port Charles, it turned out she was being forced to work for Victor, who was holding her son, Ethan Lovett, prisoner and had killed her twin sister, Paloma.

Victor moved into Wyndemere and continued pressuring Nikolas to divorce Ava. He also got his hands on Ava’s recording of Nikolas’ confession that he’d pushed Esme Price to her presumed death. Victor offered Valentin access to Charlotte but only on his terms, and was frustrated when Valentin thwarted him and rescued his daughter. Victor ordered Holly to steal a necklace containing an Ice Princess diamond from Robert, but she turned the tables on him, arranging for him to be drugged and faking a near-fatal injury so she could skip town. Victor arranged for Spencer to be released from Pentonville early under the condition that he move into Wyndemere, and soon learned the truth that Nikolas was holding a pregnant Esme prisoner in an unused wing of the estate. After her escape, Victor helped cover up the crime to use as leverage against Nikolas.

Victor was frustrated when Valentin went on the run with Anna to prove her innocence, and then disappointed to learn that they had been killed in their attempt to rescue Lucy. He continued using deputy mayor Ashby as his pawn, and told her to bring him the Ice Princess necklace because it contained a code he would use to save the world. But when he found out that Eileen had been forced to act as a double agent, he killed her. Then, Lucy constantly slipping away from the safe house led Victor straight to where she, Anna, and Valentin were hiding.

After forcing Valentin to give him the real Ice Princess necklace, Victor then shot Anna to punish his son for his betrayal. He boarded The Haunted Star and set sail with Obrecht, Spencer, and Ace as his “guests,” heading off to “save the world!” As they arrived at the Cassadine bunker in Greenland, Victor revealed that his plan was to stop the world’s overpopulation by releasing a deadly pathogen that would kill half the population of the planet. He needed Obrecht to formulate an antidote to save the people he deemed worthy, including Cassadines like Spencer and Ace.

But Spencer wanted nothing to do with Victor’s plan, and when the villain caught Trina on board, he planned to test the virus on them. However, when Valentin arrived with Laura, Drew, and Curtis, Victor had Obrecht inject his son, instead! Victor tried to escape with Obrecht and the pathogen, but Holly interfered and he ended up slipping away on his own. Spencer confronted Victor on The Haunted Star, determined to stop him, but then the WSB bombed the ship and while Spencer survived, Victor’s body was recovered from the wreckage.

Stay tuned to see if that’s really the last we see of the Cassadine!
