Why GOOD News Could Be Bad For GH!

Ratings for the debut of ABC’s summer series GOOD AFTERNOON AMERICA — an additional hour of their long-running GOOD DAY AMERICA franchise — were reportedly about 40 percent higher than those of the show it replaced… which is why we’re sounding the battle cry and urging soap fans not to tune in to the net’s new series.

“If fans want to keep GENERAL HOSPITAL on the air, they need to make sure a clear message is sent to ABC,” says Soaps In Depth executive editor Richard M. Simms. “Although GAA is being talked-up as a limited-run series to bridge the gap between THE REVOLUTION’s demise and the premiere of Katie Couric’s new program, ABC has proven that they’ll happily pull the plug on a soap if they can replace it with something that’s cheaper to produce.”

Last year, both ONE LIFE TO LIVE and ALL MY CHILDREN were given the axe in favor of reality offerings which got lower ratings but were also cheaper to produce. “Fans need to realize that it’s never been more important to support their soaps,” says Simms. “We’re down to four shows. Do we really want to lose another one?” Join us in live-tweeting the East Coast airing of GH weekdays at 3 p.m. EST on @soapsindepthabc!
