AS THE WORLD TURNS Star Kathryn Hays Dead at 88

Daytime has lost one of its legends. Kathryn Hays, beloved for playing Kim Hughes on AS THE WORLD TURNS passed away on March 25 in Fairfield, CT, at the age of 88. “Our relationship as Bob and Kim was as close as Kathryn and my relationship except we were not married,” said longtime co-star and friend Don Hastings (Bob). “We were more like brothers and sisters and we were great friends. Our biggest squabble was that she always wanted to rehearse and I wanted to take a nap. This is a huge loss to all who knew her.”

Hays’ career began in the ‘60s with one of her most famous roles being her portrayal of Gem, a mute alien capable of healing others in the classic STAR TREK episode “The Empath.” She also appeared on series like ROUTE 66, BONANZA, THE DEFENDERS, THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., MANNIX, and MARCUS WELBY, M.D. The talented performer also hit the stage in Broadway productions of Ladybug, Ladybug, The Irregular Verb to Love, and Hot September

In 1971, Hays played Leslie Bauer on GUIDING LIGHT, and in 1972 joined the cast of ATWT as Kim Sullivan. She remained with the CBS soap until its final episode in 2010 and along with Helen Wagner (Nancy), Hastings, and Eileen Fulton (Lisa), was one of the longest-serving vets on the show. Kim and Bob Hughes became the backbone of the entire Hughes clan and one of Oakdale’s most beloved pairings.

Hays is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Bob Mancusi, three grandchildren, Kate, Cameron, and Garrett Wells, plus her great-grandson, Jack. As she loved music, her church, and dogs, her family is asking those wishing to honor her memory to contribute to The Greater Bridgeport Symphony, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Westport, CT, or your favorite dog rescue organization.

Our thoughts are with Hays’ friends and family during this difficult time.
