ATWT Wins Writing Award!

AS THE WORLD TURNS may have gone to that great soap in the sky, but the beloved drama is still winning awards! The show’s scribes took home the Writers Guild of America award for Daytime Drama at the WGA Awards on Saturday, February 5. Joint ceremonies were held in Hollywood and New York.

The soap sent in three scripts to the judges: two focused on Reid’s death and Chris realizing he had the late doctor’s heart; the finale was also submitted. “Jean Passanante, our headwriter, wrote the breakdown for the finale,” says former ATWT writer David A. Levinson, who accepted the show’s award in Hollywood. “It had an ‘Our Town‘ feel to it. Once she knew that I was the one who’d be writing the script, we went to see a production of Our Town. We talked about the ‘feel’ of the play and how that could transcend into the script.

“We felt that Bob’s retirement was the perfect way to go out,” continues Levinson. And the soap’s ending was a well-planned and thoughtfully-considered phrase, explains the scribe. “To have the last words on the show be him saying, ‘Good night’ [was] because [the late] Helen Wagner (Nancy) opened the show with ‘Good morning.'”
