When Tanner Novlan was growing up in the small farming community Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan, he never even considered acting as a possible career, let alone starring as Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL. But after being scouted at a cow dairy, he found himself working in print modeling which led to acting roles and eventually, B&B! Of course, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a bit of a delay from when Novlan was cast in March to when he actually went to work on set in July!
“It’s definitely a unique experience,” the daytime newcomer admitted to Soaps In Depth with a chuckle. “But for me, this is my experience. Because it’s my new normal in the sense that I wasn’t working on the show before. So from an actor’s experience, yeah, it’s different. But to tell you the truth, everyone has done a fantastic job making everyone feel extremely safe and following the guidelines. And as you can see as the episodes have aired, the same drama has been executed. It’s really remarkable.”
Getting settled in among the cast may have been a little different with the current social distancing rules, but Novlan made a great impression on co-star Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) by sharing some treats from the Great White North. “My fellow Canadian!” he laughed. “Yeah, I gotta get in her good graces, so I brought her a little treat! No, Jaqui has been so welcoming and she is so lovely to work off of. Especially in these conditions. I’m really lucky to have a co-star like her.”
Since Finn is being positioned as a new love interest for Steffy, it’s a good thing that he seems to be a nice guy. “He’s a guy who wants to help,” Novlan mused. “He’s a helper. it’s in his nature. He’s a doctor. I think he can’t help but fall for a girl like Steffy. He’s got a big heart. Maybe too big. And I think sometimes that gets him into trouble. But I think it’s nice that maybe Steffy is ready for a change and he’s a new man with a different set of values.” And hopefully no deep, dark secret that he’s keeping that could ruin everything! “Yet!” teased Novlan. “We don’t know yet!”
One of B&B’s current safety precautions during this pandemic is using actors’ significant others as body doubles for any intimate scenes, so that’s going to be very interesting once Finn and Steffy get close because Novlan’s wife is Kayla Ewell, who played Caitlin Ramirez from 2004-05! “I’ve pitched it to her and she is definitely game,” he smiled. “It’s a fun little trivia question for years to come for that scenario to play out. If we end up going down that road, it’s gonna be pretty cool.” The pair also have a one-year-old daughter, Poppy, so perhaps she could stand in for Steffy’s daughter, Kelly, if Finn is holding her?
Stay tuned to B&B to watch Novlan continue to develop the character of Finn and the ER doctor’s relationship with Steffy!
