THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL Raises Awareness for Kidney Disease With Emotional Storyline
Soaps have a long history of telling storylines that bring awareness to social issues, and THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL is currently doing one with their tale of Katie’s kidney disease and needing a life-saving transplant. Following the Oct. 8 episode, a CBS Cares public service announcement from CBS and the National Kidney Foundation will run featuring Katie’s portrayer, Heather Tom. “Each day, 12 people die waiting for a kidney,” she explains in the PSA. “Organ donation can mean a second chance at life. Learn more about being a living kidney donor at Kidney.org.” An additional PSA featuring Katrina Bowden (Flo) will be available online.
in the emotional storyline, Katie has found herself suffering kidney failure due to the anti-rejection medications she had been taking for her heart transplant. Surgeon and nephrology specialist Dr. Davis (played by guest star Tisha Campbell) reported that she would require a kidney transplant, and the family immediately got tested in the hopes that one of them could save Katie’s life. The National Kidney Foundation is dedicated to the awareness, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease in the United States. Currently, there are 37 million Americans with chronic kidney disease.
