In about four months, Daytime Emmy winner Chad Duell (Michael, GENERAL HOSPITAL) will be taking on his most important role yet: fatherhood! The actor will welcome his first child, a baby boy, with his girlfriend, Luana Lucci, in September. With the big day drawing nearer, Duell sat down for a State of Mind chat with his GH dad, Maurice Benard (Sonny), and opened up about his hopes and expectations in being a first-time father… and how his son was literally the answer to his prayers.
As Benard pointed out, the news that Duell and his girlfriend, who he just started dating last fall, were expecting a baby together came as quite a surprise to the actor’s fans. “We were shocked to find out,” Duell admitted. “It was a surprise.”
Duell went on to explain that before he and Lucci began dating, he often prayed to God for help in finding a greater purpose in his life. “When you live a life of routine — repeat, repeat — time goes by fast. And you feel like it’s depressing,” he shared. “My greater purpose isn’t just about TV shows and making good money. That shouldn’t be anybody’s purpose. I guess I felt, what am I meant to do? Me and Luana were praying, not knowing, for the same thing at the same time. We weren’t in a relationship at that time, either.”
As if orchestrated by some higher power, Duell and Lucci found out they were going to be parents a few months after they got together. “People always say God works in mysterious ways. Mysterious to us but it’s perfect in the long run,” he shared, adding that he feels with every fiber of his being that being a father “is going to be my big purpose.”
That’s not to say that there aren’t moments where Duell is still gobsmacked that he’ll be responsible for the life of a tiny human come September! “It’s hard to still wrap my head around,” he confessed. “It was a shock, but at the same time, what a beautiful shock. And it’s going to be a blessing that keeps on giving.”
Duell — who has a picture of his son’s ultrasound scan as the screensaver on his phone — can’t wait for this next chapter in his life. “It’s going to be a whole adventure, it’s going to be scary, it’s going to be overwhelming. But I just want to make sure that I give everything that I possibly can to him, emotionally,” he declared. “And that’s going to be my purpose… to raise the best man I possibly can.”
