GENERAL HOSPITAL Producer N’Neka Garland Dead at 49

The GENERAL HOSPITAL family is mourning the loss of one of their own. Coordinating producer N’Neka Garland has died at the age of 49, and actress Laura Wright remembered her dear friend in a heartfelt Instagram post on March 28.  “You were a shining star,” she wrote. “Your smile lit up the room and your laughter brought so much joy. You had the gift of making everyone feel like they were your favorite.

“I feel so lucky to have known you,” she continued. “I will miss sitting on your couch, telling stories, calling you weekly trying to get my schedule early and seeing your name pop up on my phone because I always knew we were gonna have a fun conversation and giggle. You truly cared about everyone. You asked about everyone. I’ve never met a person with a bigger heart and a smile to match. My heart is really, really sad tonight. And those who knew N’neka, they understand.”

Garland began her producing career back in December 1999 working as an assistant to executive producers at ABC. She worked her way up to associate producer at GH, then producer, and finally, coordinating producer, the position she has held since 2016. Garland was so beloved at the soap that they even named a character after her, The Savoy bartender N’neka, played by Ariondriah Lenyéa.

“A beautiful bright light went out today,” tweeted former GH writer Michele Val Jean. “RIP, sweet N’neka. You’re already missed.” In the comments to Wright’s Instagram tribute, many other actors commented, heartbroken at the news.

“I’m just seeing this,” said Rebecca Budig (ex-Hayden). “So upset. N’neka was the kindest. I loved her.” Nicolas Bechtel (ex-Spencer) admitted, “This one hurts. May she rest in peace.” and Hudson West (Jake) declared, “I am completely heartbroken! Loved N’neka and will miss her very much. She was the best, she was beautiful, and will be missed.”

Soap star Martha Byrne, who was best known as Lily on AS THE WORLD TURNS but also played Andrea on GH in 2009, also expressed her condolences. “She was so kind,” the actress recalled. “Sorry for the loss at the GH family. in daytime, you spend more time with your set family sometimes than at home. It’s a bond unlike any other.”
