Is Ryan Really Dead on GENERAL HOSPITAL? — Jon Lindstrom Speaks Out!

Tags:

All good things must come to an end. And also some very, very bad things, too, like the villainous serial killer Ryan Chamberlain, who finally met his maker on GENERAL HOSPITAL. But is Ryan really, truly dead?

“If Ryan is gone [again] after 25 years of having been thought dead, 25 years from now, they could just bring him back!” portrayer Jon Lindstrom mused to Soap Opera Digest. “To me, it’s neither here nor there. I mean, I would always be sad to say goodbye to such a terrific, colorful character, but as I’m fond of saying, ‘Every show closes.’ I’ve just been around too long to let something like this leave any kind of mark other than ‘That’s just what we do,’ or at least, ‘It’s part of what we do.’”

Lindstrom made his debut as Ryan back in June 1992 and began pulling double duty the following year when good twin Kevin Collins was introduced. While Ryan was seemingly killed in an explosion in 1995, it was revealed in 2018 that he was alive and being kept in Ferncliff for treatment by his brother. And bringing Ryan back to life proved a special treat for Lindstrom as the storyline gave him a chance to work with Maura West (Ava), with whom he had shared the screen back when they starred as Craig and Carly on CBS sudser AS THE WORLD TURNS.

GH Mac shot Ryan
“Maybe one more bullet, just to be sure…”ABC

“I remember that when Frank [Valentini, GH’s executive producer] told me he was bringing Ryan back, she texted me a couple of days later and said, ‘Hey, guess what? I’m supposedly working with you again!’” Lindstrom recalled. “And I realized, ‘Okay, obviously Ryan is going to fixate on another blonde and it’s going to be Maura. This should be a great time!’ And it was.”

But is this really the last we’ll see of Ryan? While being shot dead by Mac and having multiple people examine Ryan’s corpse would seem to be a little bit more permanent than the explosion where his body was never recovered, you never know what twists and turns might lie ahead. In soaps, all it takes is a little creative writing and the impossible becomes very possible!
