Lydia Look and Parry Shen Open up About Speaking Cantonese on GH

Tags:

Fans may have been surprised to see subtitles on GENERAL HOSPITAL when Brad and Selina had a brief exchange in Cantonese in front of Britt at the Metro Court rooftop pool. But Lydia Look (Selina) was thrilled to be able to play the scene on the soap and thanked executive producer Frank Valentini for bringing it to the screen.

“Thank you Frank and the writers of GH for this moment of diversity and inclusion,” she declared, re-sharing the clip on social media. The actress also added a hashtag to remind that: “representation matters.”

Co-star Parry Shen (Brad) was also excited to be able to show off his language skills, especially since he doesn’t often get the chance in his career. “Did you catch the Canto (Cantonese) exchange with Ms. Wu and Brad today on GH?” he asked fans, sharing a clip he shot on his own TV with his phone. “I hardly ever get the chance to speak Cantonese besides in video games and it’s usually a lot of cursing. So thanks to the writers and Frank for listening when we told them Lydia Look and I spoke the same dialect!”

Shen has been playing Brad since May 2013, and while it was eventually revealed that he was connected to the Wu family, one of the Five Families of Port Charles, it wasn’t until August 2015 that any of that crime family showed up. And even though Look debuted as Ms. Wu back in 2015, it wasn’t until 2021 that she reconnected with her nephew and the two shared scenes together.

Selina slipped into Cantonese when Brad mentioned business in front of Britt in order to keep outsiders from knowing what they were discussing. And since she’s got Brad under her thumb, it’s likely that it could happen again in the future. Although maybe Brad could teach Britt a few words and phrases?
