Marcus Coloma Reveals Why Nikolas Slept With Esme on GENERAL HOSPITAL
Fans were shocked — and a little disappointed — when Nikolas fell prey to Esme’s seduction on GENERAL HOSPITAL. This foolish move could destroy not only his marriage to Ava but also any attempts to repair his relationship with his son, Spencer.
“It’s obviously a dark situation,” Marcus Coloma admitted in a recent issue of Soap Opera Digest of his character’s lapse in judgment. “I went into it with the idea that Nikolas knows that he’s a terrible father and as much as he loves his son, he just keeps screwing things up.”
At the time, Nikolas believed his marriage to Ava was over and was in a very dark place. “He’s drinking a large amount of alcohol, I believe, with the idea of kind of ending [his life],” the actor explained. “I genuinely think he was in the frame of mind that the world would be better off without him. And when Esme comes in, she kind of saves his life in a weird, twisted way.
“And because of that, there’s almost a euphoric, ‘I just survived death!’ where he’s disconnected from the world,” Coloma continued, “and in that split second, it feels like it’s only him and Esme that exist on the planet.”
Unfortunately, that moment of mindless passion will have serious repercussions in the future when the liaison is exposed. However, Coloma believes that’s par for the course for his tortured alter ego. “What I think is so tragic about Nikolas is that he’s able to want something, and have laser focus on getting that thing,” he said, “and as soon as he gets it, he destroys it. It’s a vicious cycle of self-sabotage, and I think he hates himself. All he talked about for years was his son, and he blows it. All he talks about is his love for Ava, and he finds a way to sabotage it.”
It’s only a matter of time before Esme finds the perfect moment to reveal what happened and destroy Nikolas’ world completely, so stay tuned to GH because you won’t want to miss any of the drama!
