Nicholas Alexander Chavez Opens Up About Joining GENERAL HOSPITAL
Taking over for another actor on a soap can be a daunting prospect, especially for a young performer with no experience in the fast-paced world of daytime television. Thankfully, for Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who recently assumed the role of Spencer Cassadine, joining the cast of GENERAL HOSPITAL was a relatively smooth process!
“I was nervous, of course,” he admitted to Soap Hub, “but the entire cast and crew of GH were so helpful and understanding. They took the time to explain certain things that — for people who have been in the industry for decades — come as effortlessly as breathing. They were gracious and kind through all of my nerves. I really couldn’t have asked for a more supportive environment than the GH family.”
And the nerves started back in the audition process when Chavez found himself screen-testing opposite Maura West (Ava)! “It was such an honor,” he confided. “She made me feel comfortable but it also felt like she peered right into my soul, in true Ava fashion. She gave me a lot to work with as a scene partner and I was grateful for the opportunity.”
Although currently, Spencer has been avoiding anyone in Port Charles who might recognize him, his new portrayer has been getting to know his new castmates and bonding with some of them over games of chess. “I’m a chess nerd so I play a lot,” he admitted. “There are a few other cast members that play as well. Marcus Coloma (Nikolas), Genie Francis (Laura), and William Lipton (Cameron) to name a few.
“Marcus and I play all the time,” Chavez added. “We’ve really fostered a great off-screen friendship. I read an article where he talked about how often we play chess. Thankfully, he failed to mention how often he beats me! Genie Francis, too, she’s a good chess player. She beat me last week and I’m looking forward to a rematch!”
Sounds like Chavez is fitting right in with the rest of the cast of GH, although Spencer’s actions aren’t going to make him particularly welcome in Port Charles when they’re revealed! Keep watching to see what happens next as Chavez puts his own stamp on the Cassadine prince!
