Nicholas Chavez Opens up About Playing Lyle Menendez in Monsters
Fans who miss seeing Nicholas Chavez as Spencer on General Hospital can finally check out the talented actor in his new series. All nine episodes of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story are now streaming on Netflix!
The series chronicles the real-life story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, probing into their twisted family dynamics and the media circus that erupted around the brothers’ trial. Chavez stars as Lyle Menendez with Cooper Koch as his brother, Erik, and Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny play their parents, Jose and Kitty.
Playing a real person is an extra challenge for any actor, and Chavez told Entertainment Tonight that he prepared for the role “thoroughly.” Straddling the line between fact and fiction can be difficult. “There’s a lot of information and also a lot of information that we don’t have,” the actor admitted. “And then that’s part of your job as an artist.”
Still, Chavez enjoyed shooting the series, which is set in the ‘90s, before he was even born! “It was such a cool era to be transported back to,” he confided. “Every actor dreams of doing a period piece. I was so thrilled to be a part of this project and get to explore the fashion and the cars and the era… all very cool.”
After fans have binged all of Monsters, they can then look forward to seeing Chavez as Father Charlie in Grotesquerie, another show from producer Ryan Murphy which premieres on FX on Wednesday, Sept. 25. “It was so much fun to work on,” he enthused to Showsha of the series. “What an opportunity. When Ryan called me, I was ecstatic. I had just gotten done working with him on Monsters — or I guess I still was at that time, we were still finishing up. And I was just overjoyed that he wanted to give me another opportunity to play an interesting character in one of his worlds.”
Unfortunately for GH fans, it looks like Chavez is keeping pretty busy so a return trip to Port Charles to resurrect Spencer from his watery grave seems unlikely right now. Still, back when he left the soap, he did say, “We are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles,” so anything is possible!
