Nicholas Chavez’s Netflix Series Gets a Premiere Date!

Tags:

On Aug. 20, 1989, brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez infamously shot and killed their parents, Jose and Kitty, in the den of the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. So it’s fitting that 35 years later — on Aug. 20, 2024 — Netflix dropped the trailer for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, and revealed that the highly-anticipated limited series starring none other than General Hospital alum Nicholas Alexander Chavez (ex-Spencer) will premiere Thursday, Sept. 19!

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story. September 19. Only on Netflix,” the Daytime Emmy winner announced on Instagram, sharing a first look at the true crime anthology series from producers Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. “So excited, holy heck!!”

Similar to how the first season of Monsters told the tale of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the new installment will follow the well-known case of the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted in 1996 for murdering their parents. According to the official Netflix synopsis, “While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed — and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole — that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.”

In sharing Lyle and Erik’s story, the new season “dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?”

Chavez’s casting as Lyle, opposite Cooper Koch as younger brother Erik, was first announced in June 2023. He exited GH this past January — when Spencer was presumed dead after falling into the Seine River — in what was initially called a “temporary” leave of absence of “several months” to work on the Netflix project. By April, however, reports were swirling that the young star was not planning to return to the soap, and Chavez made an official statement about his intentions come early May.

“I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me,” he shared on Twitter/X, “and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors, and fellow actors. [Executive producer] Frank Valentini is a mentor and a friend, and we’ve had some pretty extensive conversations about my future on the show. While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.”

One of those projects that has kept him “busy” since leaving the soap is Grotesquerie, another series from Murphy. The horror drama — in which Chavez will play Father Charlie — will debut on cable network FX on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
