GH’s Sofia Mattsson Opens up About Her Heartbreaking Storyline

Tags:

On GENERAL HOSPITAL, Sasha and Brando are still trying to work through their grief over the tragic death of their newborn son, Liam Mike. Nearly a week after the heartbreaking scenes aired, GH viewers still seem to be divided over the show’s decision to kill off the baby — but most agree that portrayers Sofia Mattsson and Johnny Wactor delivered Emmy-worthy performances as the new parents said goodbye to their baby boy.

Like her scene partner, Wactor, did before her, Mattsson took to her social media pages to thank the soap’s fans for their outpouring of messages regarding her portrayal of this difficult tale. “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for all your comments about little Liam’s storyline on GH,” the actress shared on Twitter. “I loved the challenge of acting out this beautifully written and heartbreaking story.”

Mattsson also made a second post on her Instagram page, sharing a personal photo of her cuddling her sweet baby boy, born in July. “After every day of filming my current storyline on GH, I quickly hurried home and hugged my little baby so hard,” she wrote. “And while I felt such extreme gratefulness to have him be so healthy and happy, my heart was still breaking for everyone who goes through similar experiences to Sasha and Brando, or loss of any kind, in real life.”

In the GH storyline, tormented new parents Sasha and Brando were faced with the difficult decision to take their son off of life-support, knowing that he’d suffered such severe brain damage during delivery that he would otherwise spend his life connected to machines. The gut-wrenching scenes were incredibly powerful, but some viewers criticized the soap for telling such an upsetting story just a week before Christmas. In a lengthy Twitter statement, Wactor explained his personal belief as to why there may not have ever been a “right” time to tell little Liam’s story, and Mattsson shared the important thing that she’s learned from her alter ego’s grief. “I’m extra reminded this holiday season to hug the ones I love,” she concluded, “and never take a day for granted.”
