Vanessa Mathison Previews Her GENERAL HOSPITAL Appearance!
In the Thursday, April 21, episode of GENERAL HOSPITAL, Cameron Mathison‘s character, Drew, has a very important business meeting with a woman named Mia. And the woman playing the beautiful executive coach is none other than Mathison’s beautiful wife, Vanessa Mathison!
The casting was no coincidence: It was planned to coincide with Vanessa’s 55th birthday on April 19. “After 40 years of being a General Hospital fan, I can’t believe I got to spend a day in Port Charles and meet Drew Cain,” she cheered in the text of an Instagram story. Meanwhile, in an Instagram post of his own, the GH star shared his gratitude for the soap’s executive producer, Frank Valentini. “I can’t believe you made this happen,” Cameron wrote. “What a bday present for my girl.”
Ahead of Vanessa’s guest appearance, the couple chatted with ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT correspondent Matt Cohen — who previously played GH’s Griffin — about her guest spot. “I grew up watching General Hospital,” Vanessa gushed. “I was watching Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco) and John Stamos (ex-Blackie). This was totally a dream come true.”
As Cameron explained, “When we met, I was a pretty big deal on ALL MY CHILDREN [as Ryan] and, well…” Interrupting her husband, Vanessa admitted with a smirk, “I had no idea who he was.”
Although Vanessa was a successful model when she was younger — and continues to model today — the soap spot marks her acting debut. “It was like the ultimate role play for the two of us,” she shared.
Cohen confirmed during the segment that Vanessa is currently only slated to appear in the one episode, but the door is open for a potential return. And possibly even an on-screen love scene with her real-life hubby! “In a way, it’s like allowing people to have eyes into our bedroom,” Cameron awkwardly chuckled — ironic, since the couple was filming their video interview in a bedroom. “In a way, it becomes a little bit more uncomfortable.”
But his wife was game to further explore their on-screen chemistry. “I think it could be kind of fun,” she told Cohen. “We would have to run lines and practice a lot.” Yep, practice a lot, since Cameron could barely get through the rest of the interview at that point! “I’m getting distracted now,” he chuckled. “My mind’s kind of like not here anymore.”
Vanessa’s GH appearance was originally scheduled to air Wednesday, April 20, but due to last week’s preemption, she will now appear in the Thursday, April 21, episode.
