Actor John Clarke, best known for playing Mickey Horton on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, has died at the age of 88. A rep for the actor’s daughter, Melinda Clarke, told Entertainment Weekly that he passed away due to complications from pneumonia on Oct. 16 and she sang “Ave Maria” to him in his final moments. Clarke’s health had been deteriorating in the years since his stroke in 2007.
Clarke originated the role of Horton patriarch Mickey back when DAYS premiered in 1965 and continued to play the character until his retirement in 2004. In 1979, he received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in 1979 and in 2004, was awarded the Daytime Emmys Lifetime Achievement Award.
Outside of daytime, Clarke appeared in television series like GUNSMOKE, THE FUGITIVE, DEATH VALLEY DAYS, and THE NEW BREED, as well as on the big screen in films like Operation Bottleneck, The Satan Bug, and It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
