B&B’s Diamond White Opens Up About Her Historic New Role

There’s a new animated series on Disney Channel and the lead role of Lunella Lafayette (and her alter ego, Moon Girl) is voiced by none other than THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s Diamond White (Paris)! Called MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR, the show is based on the Marvel comic book Moon Girl. While playing a character that is part of the Marvel Universe is certainly exciting enough, White’s new role is a historic, groundbreaking one: Moon Girl is the first Black teen superheroine.

“It’s really cool,” White told People of her new project, which premiered on Feb. 10 during Black History Month. “I think that you have to show representation to younger kids.”

In the show, Lunella/Moon Girl is a gifted 13-year-old Black girl who lives a double life as a heroine protecting her neighborhood on Manhattan’s Lower East Side from danger — and then she accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur, a red Tyrannosaurus, into present-day New York City!

“I wish I had a show like this growing up, because then maybe I would’ve been a little bit smarter,” the B&B star said of how her animated character shows young girls that they can be brainy and beautiful. “It’s really an all-inclusive show. It’s really beautiful.”

While many of MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR’s messages will resonate with young Black girls — like an episode where getting a perm ruins Lunella’s hair — White says that she hopes the show will empower young girls on a broader level as well. “It’s such an important character, but I try not to think about it too hard,” she confessed. “Because at the end of the day, she is just a 13-year-old girl. It’s important to have her resonate in that.”

MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR (which was renewed for a second season back in October ahead of its premiere) is currently airing on Disney Channel and is available for streaming on Disney+. Check out White in action in this behind-the-scenes video from the exciting new show below!
