Sharon Case Previews What’s Next for Sharon on Y&R (EXCLUSIVE)
During Sharon’s breast cancer storyline on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, portrayer Sharon Case has been delivering some knockout performances but when Soaps In Depth asked if anyone was taking notes for a potential Daytime Emmy reel, she quickly dismissed the idea. “I think everybody gave up on me and the Emmys a long time ago!” the actress admitted with a hearty laugh. “It seems to be a unanimous decision that I’m not going to get nominated and we’re all over it and we’ve moved on.”
Still, Case will have plenty of material to choose from should she choose to submit herself again, because while learning that the first surgery wasn’t successful was bad, waiting for the results of the second surgery will be worse. “It’s a scary place for Sharon,” she explained. “Because it’s almost like she’s in more danger now than she was in the first place. Because when she first got into it, the doctors give you these solutions. You’re gonna get treatment, you’re gonna have a surgery… you think positively that you’re gonna do these things and that’s gonna be it.
“But when that doesn’t end up resolving it, you feel as though your odds have now just gone down,” Case continued. “ So in Sharon’s mind, there’s a better chance that these test results are going to come back worse than the last test results. I think she’s really starting to prepare herself for the worst. But she’s doing it in subtle ways, with people around her, for the people that she leaves behind to be set up and okay in the case of her departure. And while that’s difficult to face, I think at this point, she’s ready to face that.”
Although the character may be planning for the worst, the actress is looking forward to what could come next for Sharon should she survive this battle. “I do think that what would be great to come out of this storyline of illness is people sometimes reinvent themselves after they come out of something like that,” she mused. “I’ve heard a lot about people who’ve had near-death experiences. They become far more ambitious and they have far less fear. They kind of become different people. And Sharon is this kind of survivor.
“Whatever that has to do with her love life or what she does with her career, who knows what she’ll endeavor to go and actually do,” Case added. “How that might change her family dynamic. Sharon’s always been this kind of stay-at-home mom, Mother Earth-type, which has been lovely. But maybe what this storyline could mean when it ends is we see an entirely different second chapter to the other half of Sharon’s life.”
Battling cancer will change Sharon’s life forever, and deeply affect the relationships she has with her loved ones. But will it mean continuing to lean on Rey, returning to Nick, or exploring her feelings for Adam? “Maybe what that decision will come down to is who is Sharon now?” Case teased. “And which one does she really need and what really belongs in her life as we move into this new chapter.”
