At Home With GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Kin Shriner (EXCLUSIVE)

Back when GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Kin Shriner was a young buck, he was up on all the Hollywood hot spots, but these days, he enjoys a much quieter life. “I’ve kind of outlasted all my friends in Los Angeles – I’m like the last man standing,” Scotty’s portrayer cracked to Soaps In Depth. “But I’ve got my girlfriend, Trish [Ramish], I’ve got GH, and I’ve got my Vespa! So when I’m not going to work, I can pretty much take my time, take it easy and do whatever I want.”

That said, Shriner does have a bit of a morning routine. He starts with a coffee and then hops on his beloved Vespa to hit the gym — where he does more than just get a workout. “I’ve been going for years, so I socialize with my friends while I ride the bike for cardio for about 45 minutes,” he said. “My brother [Wil] has a yacht club in Florida where he kibitzes and goofs off, I have a gym where I do the same thing!

“I wish it were a yacht club serving drinks,” he added with a grin, “but I enjoy my mornings.”

From there, it’s back home to finish his workout, freshen up and learn his lines. Then, if Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie) has her way, he and Trish might hop into a real car to visit her for brunch in Marina del Ray. Or perhaps he’ll catch a movie with Maurice Benard (Sonny). But truth be told, you’re most likely to find Shriner tooling around on his Vespa and just enjoying his home, sweet home — at least, that’s what Soaps In Depth found him doing when he let us follow him around for a day!

“Deco Art Galleries in Studio City has the biggest collection of heyday Hollywood photographs,” Shriner said. “I go there sometimes just for fun, but my girlfriend got me this print for my birthday because I’m a huge Orson Welles fan. That’s him getting out of a cab below his name on the marquee for his big movie — and it doesn’t get any better for an actor than that!”

"I leaf through my Soaps In Depths over coffee, and if there’s not one picture of me, I get a little miffed,” Shriner joked from his dining room. “This whole room has a very tropical feel, with custom vintage bamboo chairs. I really like the tropics, but this is as close as I’m going to get in Studio City, CA.”

“I like to look at my lines, get the gist of what it’s all about, and then try to figure out how I’m going to play it,” Shriner said of his process when he gets a new script. “I can’t just go up there and make it up — even though one might think I do!”

"I took up cooking about three years ago, and it’s become part of my day,” Shriner revealed. “At around three o’clock, I go to the grocery store and figure out what to make. Then I come out and pick a few lemons from this incredible tree in the backyard because I use a lot of it in my cooking.”

Whether learning lines or relaxing, Shriner loves being in his “painted aquarium” inspired by The Breakers’ fish-tank bar in Palm Beach. “You looked down, and there were fish swimming underneath you, but I don’t have a tank,” he said. “I have a beautiful blue table with fish swimming around that was custom-painted by an artist friend about 20 years ago, then these guys on the wall.”

“Coco was mentioned on GH in September and seems to get into all the pictures, and we have another dog, Tula,” Shriner shared. “They’re always underfoot and stare at me all day. I don’t know what they want. But if there’s anything going on in the kitchen, that’s the first thing that brings them to life!”

“I collect giant movie posters. They’re an art form. So if you’re lucky enough to get the giant print poster and it happens to be in French, you’ll take it,” Shriner said. “This is actually the room I spend most of my time in. It has a fireplace and Turner Classic Movies is on the TV around the clock. I call it the TCM room.”

"When I come home from the gym, I top my workout off with about 100 pull-ups,” Shriner revealed. “I discovered the chin-up bar long before gyms existed. My father gave us one when we were eight. It’s not an attractive thing to have in your house... but I use it well.”

“When people see me with a little bag on my arm, riding my yellow Vespa, it brings a smile to their faces, because it just looks like I’m having a good time — and I am having a good time,” Shriner grinned. “I rode motorcycles all my life, but 20 years ago, I decided I didn’t need all that power. Then I went to Florence, Italy, and noticed everybody rode scooters. I fell for the lifestyle.”
