Happy 59th Anniversary to GENERAL HOSPITAL — See The Changing Cast Through the Years

As the longest-running soap opera currently in production, GENERAL HOSPITAL has undergone a great many cast changes since its premiere on April 1, 1963. And on its 59th anniversary, we’d like you to join us in looking back at how much things have changed over the years… and sometimes how they’ve stayed the same!

Over the decades, fans have seen beloved characters come and go. Some, like Stone Cates, meeting tragic ends while others, like Tracy Quartermaine, leave Port Charles to live happily ever after (presumably!) and come back for the occasional visit. GH’s popularity has drawn in some high-profile guest stars, like Roseanne Barr as Jennifer Smith, James Franco as Franco, and most famously, Elizabeth Taylor as Helena Cassadine. And some actors found fame in Hollywood after stints on the soap, like Demi Moore (ex-Jackie), John Stamos (ex-Blackie), and Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky).

But it’s the beloved veteran actors who have spent years in Port Charles that fans are tuning in to see every day. Even as cast members have come and gone over the years, stars like Maurice Benard (Sonny), Genie Francis (Laura), Leslie Charleson (Monica), and Kin Shriner (Scotty) have been around for viewers to watch day after day.

Browse through this collection of cast photos from GH’s almost six decades on the air in our special gallery below and see how many actors and characters you remember watching over the years!
