When Cynthia Watros took over the role of Nina on GENERAL HOSPITAL, the soap made the wise decision of introducing her slowly with a couple scenes opposite single characters to ease her in with the audience. And while we happen to miss the old-school announcer going, “The role of so-and-so is now being played by…” it isn’t really as necessary in this day and age of the internet and social media. Also, it’s a shame they also downplayed her physicality by dressing her in a plain gray sheath dress instead of something more colorful. But subtle was clearly the game plan here.
Watros’ first scene on GH was when Nina approached Curtis in the hospital corridor to ask her friend how Jordan was doing after her kidney transplant. She gently needled him into opening up about what was bothering him, and when he admitted that the hospital bills not covered by insurance were overwhelming, she begged him to let her help pay for them. But when he insisted on dealing with them on his own, Nina agreed to back off. There was a nice, easy chemistry between Watros and Donnell Turner during the scene that bodes well for the future of Nina and Curtis’ friendship.
Later in the episode, Nina entered The Metro Court to interrupt Jax and Valentin. After Jax beat a hasty retreat, she asked Valentin what he had against the guy. When he admitted that he tried to buy out Jax’s share of Aurora Media, she opened up a little bit about her childhood before gently telling him how much she appreciated his concern. But Watros then let the intensity show in her eyes as she told Valentin she needed him to stay out of her business with Jax. After Valentin responded with a kiss, Nina softened again, explaining that she couldn’t wait to become his wife so she could have that beautiful family she’s always dreamed of. They shared another kiss and a tender embrace, though after she left to “go freshen up,” Valentin proved he wasn’t actually going to listen to her.
The spark between Watros and James Patrick Stuart is arguably the most important chemistry test for her to take, and she held her own admirably. The Port Charles newcomer has some mighty big designer shoes to fill, but while her Nina already feels a little softer, Watros has offered up glimpses of the tiger thats still inside waiting to be unleashed when you least expect it. We look forward to seeing this new Nina woven into the canvas and seeing how Watros interacts with all of her new castmates!
