GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Kin Shriner Celebrates Scotty’s Past and Looks to His Future (EXCLUSIVE)

Tags:

In honor of GENERAL HOSPITAL’s recent 56th anniversary, a host of Port Charles’ legacy players came together for Gail’s scavenger hunt — and Kin Shriner (Scotty) had a blast! “It was nice to see Denise Alexander (Lesley) and work with Leslie Charleson (Monica), Genie Francis (Laura), Lynn Herring (Lucy), and Jackie Zeman (Bobbie),” the actor raved to Soaps In Depth. “We’ve all been here for over 40 years, so we have history. When we’re in a scene, I look at Jackie and Genie, and they are Bobbie and Laura — and I’m Scotty Baldwin!

“As I close in on my 42nd year [on the show], it’s mind-boggling that this guy is still in a suit, being Scotty Baldwin,” he continued. “He’s got a son he tries to help, a couple of girls he has his eye on, and a little law practice. That’s who Scotty is today, and this car’s still got some mileage! All of the characters running around that anniversary episode are vintage. Sometimes we need a tune-up, but we’re classic, peach automobiles. I don’t know if everybody else will appreciate that I compared us all to a bunch of antique cars… but we’re still running, right?”

When pressed to pick a favorite GH era, Shriner basically traces his entire history on the show, but the early years were clearly a highlight. “The ’70 and ’80s were glorious,” he raved. “And it was fun when Scotty became sort of a rogue. He was bearded and tarnished and got into hijinks and shenanigans with Heather — like trying to steal Jason! And then, of course, came the ’90s, with Lucy and all that business. And then the spin-off to PORT CHARLES, with the whole Baldwin family. There’s a lot of life in there. When you play someone for 42 years, you’ve done it all!”

For Scotty, doing it all has included lots of romance. After losing Laura to Luke and Dominique to a brain tumor, “I don’t know that he ever found another big love of his life,” Shriner maintained. “He decided there were a lot of fish in the sea, and the Lucys, Heathers and Bobbies came along.”

These days, it’s been all about Ava for Scotty. “She’s a throwback to the women he’s always liked — the connivers who had something up their sleeves,” Shriner said. “That’s the kind of girl Scotty Baldwin goes for… because he’s a schemer himself!” Not only is Ava perfect for Scotty, but Shriner can’t say enough about portrayer Maura West. “She’s one of the greatest soap stars ever,” he insisted. “There’s nothing she can’t do, so they give her a lot, and she just cooks. And I’m always thrilled to be in the kitchen with her.”

Shriner’s not yet ready to retire… but he does know what he’ll do first when the time comes. “I live on my Vespa, and I miss Tony Geary (ex-Luke), so the idea of a scooter and his boat in Amsterdam is tempting,” he grinned. “But I don’t want to just go and spend a week there. If I’m going to Amsterdam, I want to go on to Italy next and just keep moving. So when the day comes that I say goodbye to GH like Tony did, that’s the time I’ll go over there.” For the moment, however, he’s still enjoying the ride. “The Scott Baldwin character’s like a hot rod from the ’70s,” he said. “He’s still souped up and ready to go… but where is he going? We shall see!”
