Parry Shen Opens up About GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Controversial Baby Switch Storyline
During the GENERAL HOSPITAL episode where Brad was so grief-stricken over the death of his adopted son that he agreed to swap babies with Nelle’s, actor Perry Shen took to Twitter to live tweet along with the soap and answer questions from the fans. Although some viewers were appalled at Brad’s actions, the actor argued that he was just trying to protect his husband, Lucas, from the grief of losing their child because he loves him so much. “He’s tortured throughout this whole ordeal,” Shen explained. “He’s not exactly twirling his mustache — if he had one. He’s been thrown into extraordinary circumstances.”
While Brad has done some sneaky things over the years, Shen appreciate that his alter ego is not a true villain (despite what some viewers might insist!). “I like that he’s not squeaky clean but a human being that makes mistakes like us all,” he mused. “Those that tweet ‘he’s bad’ obviously have not been watching very closely or fast-forwarding through my scenes since 2013 He’s a very good guy that is always in the wrong place and wrong time.”
Although some GH viewers already think Brad is evil, Shen hopes that this storyline doesn’t cause those who still like his character to change camps! “This will challenge it,” he confides. “But if fans are real fans, they will want to see these characters and their journey. I just always try to make everything work as best I can and grounded as much as I can. And hopefully fans appreciate that.”
Of course, once the truth about Wiley’s identity is revealed and Lucas realizes that he’s raising his nephew Michael’s son, that’s not going to be good for his marriage to Brad. “This will definitely change things,” Shen allowed. “How can it not?” And while this means that things will likely end very badly for Brad, as an actor, there’s nothing he can do except perform the scripts he’s given, whatever that means for his future on GH. “Gotta go with the flow,” he declared. “No point in worrying about things I can’t control. As it is with life.”
Still, having such powerful scenes to play is what an actor lives for, no matter how heartbreaking the story may be. “I know lots of folks are upset with the Wiley situation,” Shen concluded. “How fortunate we are to have a viewership that is so engaged in the story, to care so much about these characters’ lives. Speaking only for myself, it’s way more interesting and challenging for me as an actor to have some drama going on. No one becomes an actor just to make entrances and exits all day long. Nor do we tune in to just see that, even though we might say we do. We want something to happen. So being able to run with the ball, no matter how painful the scenario, is exciting.”
