It’s normal for soaps to air an encore episode on a holiday, but news that GENERAL HOSPITAL is airing three additional reruns before Labor Day threw many fans into a panic! However, ABC network executive Nathan Varni has assured everyone there is nothing at all to be concerned about. The additional reruns scheduled to air from Aug. 29 through Aug. 31 are simply a result of the soap not being preempted enough earlier this year!
“You shouldn’t be worried,” Varni tweeted. “It’s been planned for months. Last year we didn’t have to take additional encores because Trump interrupted the show so much. This year, with less interruptions, we needed to take some extra days off based on the number of new episodes we produce for you.”
So fans can take heart that they will be spending the same number of days in Port Charles that they do every year, they’re just having one big break instead of spacing them out over the months. In addition to the encore episode scheduled to air on Monday, Sept. 3, there will be three additional encores airing from Wednesday to Friday the week before. And if you’re wondering which episodes you’ll be able to re-watch, they’re from this January featuring the climax of the Faison storyline that resulted in Nathan’s tragic death. Here’s how they break down:
Wednesday, Aug. 29: Lucas announces to his family he and Brad are adopting a baby, Finn and Alexis bond, Lulu and Obrecht are caught in Faison’s death trap, and Faison shot Nathan when he attempted to rescue Maxie from the villain’s clutches.
Thursday, Aug. 30: Dante and Sonny arrived at Spoon Island as Lulu and Obrecht managed to escape the poison gas, everyone wanted answers from Faison, and Nathan underwent surgery for his life-threatening injuries.
Friday, Aug. 31: Sam and Drew returned from their honeymoon to chaos, Jason got answers out of Faison, and Maxie was briefly reunited with Nathan as he regained consciousness only to pass away before her eyes.
Monday, Sept. 3: The special episode featuring Nathan’s emotional funeral where everyone said one last goodbye to the fallen hero and Maxie said farewell to her husband one last time.
And for those fans wondering why GH doesn’t delve farther back into their archives and rerun some vintage classics from the ‘70s and ‘80s, Varni revealed there was unfortunately a very practical financial reason for that. “Music rights and talent costs,” he explained. “We’re trying to find a way, but as of today, it’s cost prohibitive. We will be the first to announce should we strike a deal!”
GH will return with brand new episodes beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 4, so don’t worry — you won’t miss a moment of the drama in Port Charles. And for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine!
