When Steve Burton and Kelly Monaco shared their first scenes together in the PCPD interrogation room on GENERAL HOSPITAL back on December 3, 2003, neither actor realized what was about to happen. “That was the kickoff to us working together and kind of starting this relationship,” Burton admitted in a Facebook Live video.
Jason and Sam were an immediate hit with fans who nicknamed the couple “JaSam” and now they’re the subject of a special retrospective featuring highlights from their 15 years together. The GH Collection presents “The Best of Jason and Sam”, 15 episodes of the soap spanning 15 years and available to watch both on ABC.com and on the ABC app. And these aren’t just clip packages — these are the entire episodes presented from start to finish!
One of the episodes included in the collection is the infamous game of “tequila and dominos” that Jason and Sam played. “Yes, I really did spit on Steve in the middle of this scene,” Monaco revealed. “That’s been a question asked over the years.” Burton couldn’t believe the director didn’t stop tape but now realizes that the moment is what made the scene great. “There was that real moment in there,” he mused. “It was real and it was fun and we just kept going. We just made it work and it became something.”
Even before the popularity of social media, the actors both knew that their pairing was something special with the audience. “Before Twitter, we did these great events down in Disney and we would have 50,000 of the most amazing fans there,” Monaco explained. “We were able to hear a lot of feedback. And generally really positive feedback. I think hearing the feedback from the fans, I believe the build up and the wait and the angst, it was written intentionally.”
Burton agrees, adding that the slow burn of Jason and Sam’s relationship was key to making it work so well. “The one thing that they did, thank God, and what we wanted, was to pace it to make it a build to make it something special,” he said. “It was a great blessing to be able to do that.”
And to look back at their characters’ love story over the past 15 years is kind of mind-boggling to the daytime stars. “You never think that’s going to be the case when you’re working,” Burton confided. “You don’t know how it’s gonna impact people. It’s just awesome that it has. To be called a supercouple is crazy to me.”
