When Genie Francis returned to GENERAL HOSPITAL in September after so many months away, she confided to Soaps In Depth that she didn’t have any trouble slipping back into the role of Laura and the soap that has been a part of her life since 1977. “I feel like I’m in the groove, and it happened quicker than I thought,” she marveled. “It’s funny. That place doesn’t really change. The biggest change for me is that Laura has her own apartment – and it is beautiful!”
The actress spent the beginning of the year redecorating her new Los Angeles home, painting, knitting, and traveling, but now it’s back to work — and in a major front-burner storyline as Laura has returned to her husband, Kevin, having no idea he’s been replaced by his serial killer brother, Ryan Chamberlain! “It’s starting to get really interesting,” Francis teased. “I can’t wait to open up my scripts and see what’s going to happen.”
While she has her own big storyline, Francis is also happy to see Laura expanding her presence on the soap to interact with some other characters as well. “I was in hits little pocket of being there to be Lulu’s listener,” she recalled. “And as much as I love Emme Rylan, just getting that one thing to do got boring! So I’m having more fun because I’m getting to do some stuff that I haven’t before. They’re moving me around to all the people Laura knows, which is great. She lived there all her life, so she’s got deep, long ties. These are friendships that have been building on the show for years and years, so it’s good to see them sometimes!”
Francis couldn’t be happier to be home at GH again, and she’s excited about what’s to come. “I feel like I matter and I’m definitely back on the show in a real way, not a temporary way,” she declared. “It’s a good feeling.” The Daytime Emmy winner was also touched by the overwhelming support she received during her time away from the soap. “I’m very grateful to the fans for fighting for me the way they did,” Francis shared. “It was overwhelming, and I was shocked, delighted, and moved by it. So, I will do my very best to turn in good work for them!”
