What’s up With the Moss on GENERAL HOSPITAL? — Frank Valentini Speaks Out

Port Charles has been getting a bit of a makeover recently with Monica redoing the Quartermaine mansion, but no remodel had the GENERAL HOSPITAL fans talking like the Corinthos kitchen. And not because of the clean, airy layout or the appliances… nope, it was all about the moss! And at the recent GH fan event held at Graceland, the soap’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, took part of his time on stage to address the elephant in the room, as it were! “Okay, let’s talk about the thing that’s in the kitchen,” he grinned as the audience chuckled.

Valentini began by admitting he felt exactly the same as all the viewers who couldn’t believe their eyes. “So when it first showed up, I was like, ‘What is this?! It looks like moss or… like a bad salad.'” he recalled. ” But my production designer, who had done such a beautiful job transforming and creating the kitchen said, ‘No, it’s very chic. It’s what people do.’ And I just let her do it. So it’s kind of taken on a life of its own.

“And then it started to grow!’ Valentini continued. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, there’s things shooting out of this moss!’ So every day the prop guys came with very tiny scissors and cut it out. And they were like, ‘Frank wants the moss cut.’ I was like, ‘Okay, add that to the list of crazy things I’ve requested over the years.'”

But the EP insisted that he trusts his production design team. “Supposedly it’s very chic and it’s very in, design-wise,” Valentini told the crowd. But if you hate it, I’ll figure something else out.” He smiled sheepishly and then quickly added, “But I didn’t want to do a bowl of apples. Because everybody has that.”

Well, the bowl of moss has definitely got the attention of the fans, for better or worse, and it’s practically become a character in and of itself! Stay tuned to see what other remodels are in store for the soap, and for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
