With Drew flying off to Australia on GENERAL HOSPITAL, some fans worried that this was the soap’s way of writing the character out. And in fact, when that happened on screen, portrayer Cameron Mathison had flown to New Jersey to participate in ChristmasCon, where fans have the opportunity to meet the stars from their favorite holiday films.
But while navigating the crowded show floor — and constantly interrupting himself to say hello to all the fans who were cheering for him as he walked around — Mathison addressed the rumors of his exit. “The number one question I’m getting while I’m here is whether I’m leaving GH,” he declared. “And I don’t know why there’s a rumor out there but I’m definitely not. I’m having the best time ever on GH.”
Mathison became a soap star when he debuted as Ryan Lavery on ALL MY CHILDREN in January 1998. He remained with the ABC soap until its final episode in 2011, earning two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor during his time in Pine Valley.
After AMC’s end, Mathison continued to make guest appearances in primetime and began starring in movies for Hallmark. He also worked as a correspondent and co-anchor for ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and co-hosted Hallmark’s HOME & FAMILY alongside Debbie Matenopoulos.
In 2021, it was announced that Mathison would be joining the cast of GH but the role was kept under wraps until it was finally revealed that he was taking over as the new Drew Cain. Since returning to Port Charles, Drew has sparked a new romance with Carly and found himself in prison for insider trading. Now that he’s a free man again, Drew has a lot to catch up on, so it’s good that Mathison is sticking around to continue telling his story!
