Cameron Mathison Previews His New Role on GENERAL HOSPITAL!

The countdown is on for fan fave Cameron Mathison’s debut on GENERAL HOSPITAL! And even though the soap is keeping when he’ll first air or who he’ll be playing under wraps, ALL MY CHILDREN’s former Ryan joining GH is one of the most anticipated Port Charles casting coups of the year! Mathison recently chatted with Soap Opera Digest about his new gig, and while he didn’t divulge any details about his new character, he did have plenty to say about how much fun he’s having at his new job and returning to daytime after a decade. “I’m having such a good time,” Mathison confessed. “It feels in many ways like coming home.”

Since the end of AMC in 2012, Mathison has kept plenty busy as an actor and host, especially as the co-anchor of Hallmark Channel’s HOME & FAMILY morning program. But, he revealed, daytime has always had a “very, very special place in my heart.” So upon learning that he’d have some newfound availability in his schedule with HOME & FAMILY’s production being scaled back to twice a week, Mathison reached out to GH executive producer Frank Valentini. (HOME & FAMILY has since been canceled.)

“Something I’ve always wanted to do was work on GH,” Mathison explained. “I kind of reached out to Frank… and I just said, ‘Listen, Frank, I’m going to have three days a week [free] and I don’t know if there’s anything, I don’t want to be presumptuous, you know I’ve always been a huge fan of yours and the show… ’ I didn’t even practically finish the text or whatever it was. He just took it and went with it and it’s amazing! Like, the whole thing has just been way beyond what I was sort of like secretly having, like, kind of fantasy hope for.”

As it turns out, Mathison had just as many questions about who he’d be playing at first as his fans did! “I was given, like, little decoy names of characters and storylines,” he shared. “It’s been also very easy for me to tell people I have no idea what’s going on because I literally have had no idea what’s going on!”

What the actor did share about his GH character is that “it’s a great opportunity for me as an actor. I’m super excited about it. It is different [than what I’d previously played as Ryan], and also, in some ways, has aspects of it that really play to my strengths, too.”
