Cameron Mathison Shares an Update on His Cancer Recovery

Back in September 2019, Cameron Mathison (Drew, GENERAL HOSPITAL), shared the news that he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and underwent surgery to remove the tumor before the cancer spread to other areas of his body. Since then, the actor has been having regular checkups to confirm that he remains cancer-free, and it’s time for another!

“It’s been three years since my kidney cancer surgery and I’m feeling amazing,” Mathison shared on Instagram. “I’m back here at USC Keck School of Medicine for my CT scan, chest X-rays, and blood work to make sure I can say… three years cancer-free.

“Lost of feelings coming up remembering [my wife Vanessa] and I here early in the morning back in 2019 for my surgery,” he continued. “So, so grateful for all the help, support, and love we’ve received on this journey. Love you guys.”

Throughout his diagnosis, surgery, and recovery, Mathison has remained in good spirits and kept a positive attitude about the entire experience, and that continues today. “Feeling very positive,” he declared in his selfie video outside the medical building. “Feeling optimistic. I don’t get the results for several weeks but here we go! I feel good.”

Sadly, Mathison’s mother, Loretta, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2021 and passed away in November of that year. Shortly his mother lost her battle, the GH star hosted the Gateway for Cancer Research Gala to share his and his mother’s stories to help raise awareness and money for cancer research.

Please join us in sending Mathison good thoughts as he awaits his results and check back here at for updates.
