On June 29, 2018, Cassandra James made her debut as Dr. Terry Randolph at the very end of that Friday cliffhanger episode when Liz opened the door to her old college friend. “Three years ago my life changed!” the actress declared on Instagram. “I’m so full of gratitude for the amazing journey so far.”
James joining the cast of GH made daytime history as the first transgender actress to portray a transgender character on a soap. Transgender characters have previously appeared on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, THE CITY, and ALL MY CHILDREN, but were portrayed by cisgender actors. “I’m so thankful to [executive producer] Frank Valentini and everyone at GH who were committed to having a trans woman portray Terry,” she said at the time of her daytime debut.
During the past three years, James has appeared on GH in the recurring role of the pediatric oncologist. In addition to being a sounding board for her friend, Liz, Terry was heavily involved in the storyline where young Oscar Nero learned he had cancer, and after numerous attempts at treatment failed, succumbed to the disease. Naturally, when Franco was later diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, Terry was on hand to help treat him. The week before James’ third anniversary with the soap, Terry appeared again to throw her hat in the ring and ask to be considered as the new chief of staff at GH, kicking off a new storyline for the character.
The comments on James’ anniversary post were full of congratulations and well-wishes from fans and friends. Briana Nicole (Jordan) shared a series of applause emojis, and Paulina Bugembe (ex-Valerie) declared: “So happy for you, BB! You deserve!” And actor Billy Reilich marveled: “Three years has gone by so fast! But seems like you’ve been there so much longer, too! Weird you’re not a contract actor for them!” To that, James replied: “Right? Feels like I’m just getting started!”
Stay tuned to GH to see what happens next for Terry!
