Charles Shaughnessy Opens up About His “Strange” Goodbye to GH

Tags:

Victor’s demise on GENERAL HOSPITAL was the climax of an epic story where the supervillain attempted to save the world by eliminating half of its population and the good guys tracked him down to Greenland to stop him at any cost. And the Cassadine went out with a bang when the WBS called in a drone strike that took out The Haunted Star and everyone aboard!

However, backstage, portrayer Charles Shaughnessy‘s actual farewell to the soap where he’d been playing Victor since September 2021 wasn’t quite so dramatic. “It was a bit strange because I sort of finished the day we did the scenes of dead Victor in the body bag, which was just before we had a two-week break [in production],” he revealed to Soap Opera Digest. “But that wasn’t my real goodbye because I knew I was coming back to shoot Victor [reading his will]. So everyone was like, ‘Is this your last day?’” he continued. “And I was like, ‘Well, actually, I’m coming back after the break.’ ‘Oh, good! Well, we’ll say goodbye then.’”

Unfortunately, when GH resumed production and Shaughnessy reported to the studio to tape his final scenes as Victor shared his last will and testament on video, there was hardly anyone to say goodbye to!

“When I came back, my scenes were right at the end of the day and it was just me in front of a camera reading my will,” he admitted. “I wasn’t even called in until 6 p.m. So I got to say goodbye to a few people, but the vast majority had already left for the day!”

Still, as evidenced by Constance Towers’ recent return as Helena Cassadine during this same storyline, dead doesn’t mean gone forever in Port Charles! “I expect I’ll be seeing everyone again before too long,” Shaughnessy predicts.
