GH’s Cassandra James Speaks Out During LA Pride
June is Pride Month, with events being held across America to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride. And at LA Pride on June 11, GENERAL HOSPITAL actress Cassandra James (Terry) was on hand to chat with ABC 7 during the march. “It’s a complete honor and a great responsibility that I take very, very seriously,” she said of being the first out trans actress to portray a trans character on a daytime soap. “It’s really, really exciting to be here today.”
Amidst the growing wave of hatred and bigotry in the country, it’s more important than ever that the LGBTQ+ community makes their voices heard. “Pride is a little bittersweet this year with 556 anti-trans bills that have been introduced in 49 states, including this one,” James admitted. “It’s a very important year to show up, be informed, get educated, and learn how you can support my amazing trans community.”
But being among all the crowds celebrating LA Pride also created a sense of optimism. “What the queer community is a master of is joy,” James said. “And I think oppressed folks, marginalized communities, have access to a deeper sense of gratitude, especially on occasions such as this when we get to celebrate Pride, be free, and choose our joy.”
James also knows that it is her groundbreaking role as Dr. Terry Randolph that allows her to appear on air during the march to speak out about these issues. “Thank you, GH, for giving me the opportunity to represent and uplift my beautiful trans community,” she tweeted. “We need allies more than ever and I’m so grateful for the support of the entire GH community, production, and fans alike. Much love, and happy Pride!”
