GH’s Cynthia Watros on the End of Nina and Ava
Nina and Ava’s friendship was always a little unusual for some General Hospital viewers who remembered Nina forcing Ava to give birth and then kidnapping the newborn Avery. But that was many years (and one actress) ago and over time, Nina and Ava had forged a pretty solid friendship.
With most of Port Charles turning against her and her marriage to Sonny over, Nina thought she could still lean on Ava… that is until she began to suspect that Ava had been manipulating her for her own ends! In the April 22 episode, an emotional confrontation ensued as Nina leveled her accusations and ended their friendship as she finally signed her divorce papers.
“The breakup with Sonny was difficult,” Cynthia Watros (Nina) told TV Insider. “The breakup with Ava also was very difficult. When I read those scripts, Cynthia had to mourn that. I’ve mourned both breakups. There’s something special I look forward to when I work with a platonic girlfriend.”
Since Nina and Ava are currently on the outs, Watros is sad she won’t be spending as much time working with Maura West (Ava). “[Maura and I] found so much when we worked together that wasn’t on the page,” the actress explained. “I had to be on my toes because she is so amazing. We have a history. We went to the same college [Boston University]. We’ve had similar challenges. It was a really great thing to get to work with her in those scenes in which we ‘broke up.’
“I had more material to shoot after our scene so [after we finished them] I just sat in Nina’s chair,” Watros continued. “Then, Maura came over to me and gave me a hug. I hugged back. It’s still a hard breakup. Who knows what will happen? But right now, Nina and Ava can’t be friends anymore.”
