How General Hospital Plans to Honor the Late Sonya Eddy

After the shocking December 2022 death of GENERAL HOSPITAL star Sonya Eddy, the soap will honor the late actress — and her beloved character, Nurse Epiphany Johnson — with a special episode.

During the soap operas panel at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, CA, on Jan. 11, it was announced that a standalone episode devoted to Eddy would air in late March. The special show will be part of GH’s 60th-anniversary celebrations and will usher in the return of the iconic Nurse’s Ball after a two-year break due to the pandemic the week of April 3.

The timing of the special episode is fitting since Eddy’s Epiphany had long been a staple performer at the charity gala. Eddy created the character in 2006 when Nurse Johnson took over as the head nurse at General Hospital. The actress performed in the Nurses Ball that same spring, leading her team of nurses in memorable showstoppers like “You Are Not Alone” in 2015, “Everyday People” in 2018, and “Hallelujah” in 2017, among many others.

“Sonya may be gone, but she’ll never be forgotten,” read a post on GH’s social media pages announcing the tribute to Eddy, along with a video montage of memorable scenes featuring the adored star. “Our #GH60 celebration will kick off with a celebration of her life and her character, the formidable Epiphany Johnson.”

Eddy, whose last appearance on the soap was in October, passed away on December 19 after developing an infection following elective surgery. GH often posthumously dedicates special episodes to long-running cast members, like Stuart Damon (Alan) and John Reilly (Sean), drawing upon the deep history of their Port Charles characters to craft tear-worthy sendoffs for both the real-life and reel-life personalities.
