Joshua Benard Is Recovering From a Broken Back

Tags:

Please join us in wishing a very speedy recovery to Joshua Benard (Adam, GENERAL HOSPITAL)! The talented young actor badly injured himself on Dec. 30 in an indoor rock climbing facility. “Broke my back rock climbing,” he shared on Instagram with a video of the fall. “Wear your safety [gear].”

In the video clip, Joshua is climbing up the wall without being hooked into any kind of safety ropes and when he reaches up for the next handhold, he can’t quite reach it and then loses his grip entirely, falling to the mat below and landing on his back. He is able to roll over and get up on his knees, but he’s clearly hurting.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” father Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) reported on Twitter “40% fracture in his back. The positive is it could’ve been devastating. He’s a strong boy. It may take a little while, but he’ll be back.”

The elder Benard was touched by the outpouring of sympathy and love from his legion of fans. “I want to thank everybody for the kind words,” he tweeted. “Joshua is in good hands with his mother and his girlfriend. Slowly, but surely, he’ll be back like Rocky Balboa.

The younger Benard has made multiple appearances as Adam on the ABC soap.ABC

Joshua was released from the hospital on Dec. 31, so while it’s not the best start to the new year, as his father said, it could have been much worse. “He will bounce back,” Dad declared. “He has his father’s genes.”

Joshua, who turned 18 on Dec. 5, has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming an actor and appearing in shows like STATION 19, GOOD TROUBLE, and THE REHEARSAL. After playing Young Sonny in his father’s anniversary episode of GH, he later returned to the soap as a brand-new character, Adam, a college classmate of Josslyn’s.

And Dad couldn’t be prouder of his son. While sharing a quick selfie video on Instagram urging his fans to check out the Netflix documentary Aftershock about the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, Benard got emotional mentioning Joshua. “My son fractured his back yesterday,” he said. “He’s doing great. His spirits are up. He’s strong, he’s a champion, he’ll get through it. And when you watch this documentary, Aftershock, hug the person next to you. Pass that along.”
