Kirsten Storms Opens up About Her Recent Brain Surgery

Tags:

Soap fans were stunned on June 4 when GENERAL HOSPITAL star Kirsten Storms (Maxie) announced that she was recovering from brain surgery! Although at the time the actress assured fans that the mass was not cancerous and that BFF Emme Rylan (ex-Lulu) was helping take care of her, details were scarce. But a couple of days later, Storms took to Instagram to fill in some background and thank her lovely fans for their concern and well wishes.

“I spent the last few years having random health issues that I disregarded as side effects to my medications or just something I was experiencing due to age,” she explained. “When I went to get an MRI for some severe neck pain I had been experiencing for the last few months (I assumed this neck pain was also causing my frequent ‘migraines’) my amazingly thorough orthopedist ordered an MRI of my head just to be on the ‘safe side.’”

Although that wasn’t her doctor’s area of expertise, Storms was immediately grateful that he was so thorough and ordered that particular test. “That’s when we stumbled upon a rather large, very full of fluid, cyst that was attached to the lower portion of my brain,” she revealed. “I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it.”

Naturally, in the months leading up to her surgery, Storms was nervous, but she had a terrific support system in place to help her through it. “I’m not gonna lie, brain surgery had me nervous,” she confessed. “But I’m immensely thankful to my family, friends, and incredible ‘work family’ who have been supportive, kind, and loving during a time when I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions. Work is a great place to be every day and for the two months leading up to my surgery, I found a lot of comfort being around the people I’ve worked beside for so many years. I’m excited to get back to it after my recovery.”

And unlike when brain surgery takes place on a soap like GH, Storms was left with more than just a little bandage around her head. “Yes, they shaved a portion of my head, so please no comments if you don’t like my hair — it’s temporary,” she declared. And she has clearly kept her sense of humor throughout all of this. “I now firmly believe the new plates in my brain will give me some sort of special ability,” Storms joked. “Fingers crossed, I can suddenly knit a sweater in one day. Ooh, maybe one hour!”

Please join us in continuing to send love and wishes for a speedy recovery to Storms so she can get back to work at GH very soon!
