Soap fans are a passionate bunch, never more so when they get upset at the way a storyline is turning out. And the current GENERAL HOSPITAL storyline of Sonny suffering amnesia after a near-death experience and setting up a new life as Mike in Nixon Falls, PA, has definitely sparked some debate!
Some viewers just want their Sonny back, but others are enjoying seeing another side of the character emerge in Mike. And they’re also appreciating watching the Emmy-winning Maurice Benard show off his acting skills by playing a different kind of role. And the actor is embracing the challenge wholeheartedly. “I wanted different energy,” he explained to fans on Twitter. “Something totally different with Mike than what I do with Sonny.”
Having worked in daytime for decades (he got his start as Nico on ALL MY CHILDREN back in 1987!), Benard knows how soap fans feel and understands their frustrations with the current tale. “I can imagine people don’t like change,” he allows. “But after playing the same character for 28 years, I’m having a lot of fun. And I love Cynthia Watros (Nina)!”
Watros, who has been sharing most of her scenes lately with Benard, shared the love on social media, tweeting back: “And I love you!” with a heart emoji. However, since Sonny’s been in Nixon Falls, Benard has been working with a different group of co-stars, and some of his GH castmates find themselves on the side of the fans who want Sonny back home. “Okay, fine,” joked Eden McCoy (Josslyn), “and yes, Cynthia is perfect, but we miss you!”
There’s no question that eventually Sonny will regain his memories and return to his family in Port Charles (and God help Nina when he finds out she’s been deceiving him all this time!), it’s just a matter of time. But while viewers wait for that day to come, Benard has something to ask them. “One question,” he posted to Instagram. “Cowboy or Gangster?”
And while we’re pretty sure we can guess which way the votes are going to go, we couldn’t resist putting the question to a formal vote with our online poll below. So have at it!
