Nancy Lee Grahn Shares Her Personal Connection to Alexis’ Alcoholism Storyline on GH

Tags:

When Sam attempted to talk to Alexis about her drinking on GENERAL HOSPITAL, many fans were upset by the way the alcoholic treated her daughter. And when the soap tweeted a video featuring that episode’s powerful scenes, Alexis’ portrayer, Nancy Lee Grahn, took the opportunity to explain her own real-life experience with the disease and where elements of her performance may very well be coming from.

“I lived with this occasional belligerent drunk who happened to be the man I loved more than any other, my dad,” Grahn shared. “Bob Grahn got sober, became an addictions counselor, and saved over 100 people who all showed up at his funeral to sing his praises. I get how much courage it takes to stay sober.”

Alexis’ struggle with alcoholism began back in 2016 when Julian was acquitted of murder and her law license was revoked. Turning to the bottle alienated her family and friends except for Julian, who still loved her and tried to support her. But when she accidentally ran over him while drunk, Julian blackmailed her into letting him recuperate at her home! After Alexis believed her drinking had gotten so bad she had killed someone, she finally sought help but her AA sponsor turned out to be Julian’s presumed-dead sister, Olivia, who had actually forced her brother to commit all those crimes in the first place!

Since then, Alexis has struggled to stay on the wagon with the help of her new sponsor, Finn, and the recent twists and turns in her life made it impossible for her to avoid falling off. The drama of her on-again, off-again relationship with Neil and losing her license again because of it was bad enough, but her new beau’s shocking death pushed her over the edge. Alexis wouldn’t listen to Sam, but might she listen to someone else? Or will it take a full-fledged intervention by all of Alexis’ loved ones to help her fight this addiction? Stay tuned to GH as the emotional storyline continues to unfold.
