Nicholas Chavez Reveals How Prison Changed Spencer on GH

Tags:

Spencer may have spent some time in Spring Ridge but it was his sentence in Pentonville on GENERAL HOSPITAL that truly left him a changed young man. Because while he had his Uncle Cyrus on the inside looking out for him and his Uncle Victor on the outside pulling strings to get him out, he was ultimately forced to spend much of that time alone focusing on his own life and choices.

“He had his uncles looking out for him,” Nicholas Chavez admitted to Soap Opera Digest of his alter ego’s stint behind bars. “That aspect of being so connected was good. It’s difficult for me to say if Spencer was targeted because he’s a Cassadine or if it was just because he was the new person in prison. But you could assume it was because he was seen as this pampered rich kid.”

Spencer also began sporting a new look, letting his hair grow out and sporting some facial hair. “I just grew it and I liked it and they let me keep it,” the actor revealed. “I thought that it was a good representation of the headspace that Spencer was in, because I think when you’re in a spot like that, you’re probably dealing with depression.

“And for Spencer, certainly he was dealing with anxiety about not being on the outside,” Chavez continued, “not being able to assist with all that’s going on in Port Charles, not the least of which was The Hook killer. When you’re in that headspace, you naturally start to take less care of yourself, and that was a big part of that choice.”

The Cassadine prince may be all cleaned up now, but as a free man, he has found himself struggling to pry himself out of the twisted branches of his family tree. But that may be easier said than done, with Uncle Victor holding sway as patriarch.

“Spencer doesn’t like this never-ending sense of living under his family’s thumb and in their shadow,” Chavez explained. “He wants so desperately to break away from how twisted and horrible they are, but he can never seem to get fully out of their grasp, and I think that makes him very self-conscious and pessimistic about who he’s destined to become.”

Stay tuned to GH to see if Spencer can become his own man or if he’s doomed to follow in his father’s tragic footsteps!
