If Congressman Larry McConkey on General Hospital looks familiar, there’s a very good reason for that! The actor playing the politician is Sam McMurray, who is a veteran actor with numerous credits in film and television where you’ve likely seen him before.

GH isn’t even McMurray’s daytime debut. At the beginning of his career in the late ‘70s, he played Phil on The Edge of Night and Norman Rowan on The Doctors. And in 2022, he showed up on The Young and The Restless as Dwight, a guy that Esther met on a dating app.

On television, McMurray is probably best known for being one of the stars of The Tracey Ullman Show and has also had roles in shows like Freaks and Geeks, Friends, The King of Queens, Scandal, Cristela, and The Fosters. Viewers might also recognize him from movies like Raising Arizona, Drop Dead Gorgeous, L.A. Story, and Addams Family Values. And if his voice sounds familiar, he’s done voice work for shows like Dinosaurs, Recess, Hey Arnold!, and The Boondocks.

GH Drew Nina congressman
GH isn’t McMurray’s first foray into soaps.ABC

McMurray first appeared as Congressman McConkey in the May 3 episode of GH when Drew tagged along on Nina’s visit to his office. The politician was taken aback by Drew suddenly proposing a revitalization project of the docks to beautify Port Charles and explained he couldn’t help because he has stage four lung cancer and was stepping down after this term. Drew suggested it could be his farewell gift to the city, and McConkey agreed to think about it.

The congressman returned in the May 14 episode when McConkey showed up at Drew’s office to suggest that despite his criminal record, Drew should consider a career in politics. Since Drew seemed intrigued by the possibility, perhaps McMurray will make more appearances in the future to help guide him on his new career path. Stay tuned to see what happens next!
